6 billion euros will be provided by the European Union until 2027 for the newly established European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA). HERA is a new authority that will ensure that research and production of vaccines and medicines are ramped up quickly in the event of future pandemics.
Other EU programmes will help strengthen the resilience of health systems. Together with the 6 billion euros, this will bring total support over the next funding period to almost 30 billion euros, plus investment at national level and in the private sector.
