The University of Bonn is a globally respected and international research university with a clear academic profile and defined fields of excellence in research. Some indicators of the success of Bonn’s researchers include two Nobel Prizes, two Fields Medals, numerous Leibniz Prizes and other academic honors as well as third-party funds amounting to about 154 million euros, which are raised each year in stiff competition with other researchers. As of 2019, the University of Bonn has six Clusters of Excellence - more than any other German university and is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany.
Researchers from a range of humanities and social science disciplines are active at the international Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS) at the University of Bonn. They investigate profound social dependencies such as slavery, serfdom, debt bondage, and other forms of permanent dependency across epochs, regions and cultures: from the position of each specific subject, but even more so from interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives.

Established on 4 November 1743 by Margrave Friedrich von Brandenburg-Bayreuth, with its vast range of subjects, FAU today can consolidate research beyond individual subjects and connect research with current issues such as what will new concepts for work, mobility, society and sustainability look like? Which options are there for processing extremely large volumes of data? What are the materials, energy forms and technologies of the future? Which treatments will enable us to stay healthier for longer and what will the newest developments in medical engineering enable us to do? Which basis in terms of ethics, human rights and the law can we build on in the future? When it comes to finding solutions, FAU is a world leader: It is the most innovative university in Germany and ranked second in Europe (2019 Reuters Ranking).

Research and teaching at the Universität zu Lübeck started in the field of medicine, but their informatics, natural sciences, and engineering sections today encompass much more. The common element among them is their emphasis on life science. The university offers programmes in medicine, informatics, molecular life science, computational life science, and medical engineering. The Institute for Robotics and Cognitive Systems at the University of Lübeck focuses on medical robotics. This field of research is interdisciplinary between medicine, computer science, physics, mathematics and engineering. Likewise, the work group is interdisciplinary with scientists from these disciplines. Scientists from this group have designed the first medical robotic systems worldwide.
