University of Siegen, a research university in North Rhine-Westphalia. The University of Siegen is a young, modern research university. It is firmly rooted in the South Westphalia region, whilst also maintaining extensive national and international networks. Learning to Sense
Conventional image sensors may not be the best option for technological development when it comes to automatically extracting information from image data. The “Learning to Sense” project brings together electrical engineering and computer science. Seven research chairs from the universities of Siegen and Mannheim are working together to develop novel sensors and AI software for tomorrow's cameras, microscopes and smart watches.

Innovative 3D Intestine Model to Shed Light on Disease Mechanisms
It’s tiny, only a few millimeters wide: Researchers at the University of Siegen are developing a state-of-the-art 3D intestinal model on a microchip. The model should help scientists to understand why people with a certain blood clotting disorder suffer from difficult-to-treat intestinal bleeding. Want to find out more?
Ultimately, this model could be used to test new compounds that might stop intestinal bleeding or repair damaged blood vessels. Researchers are using the technology to safely test both existing and newly developed drugs in the lab, while also eliminating the need for animal testing.
Artificial Voices, Real Threat – University of Siegen
“Hi Grandma, it’s Florian. I’m in trouble and need money.” What sounds like an emergency call is actually a deepfake: Cybercriminals use AI to create realistic voice imitations of people the victim knows in order to gain their trust or steal money – automatically, personalized, and on a massive scale. How can people tell whether they are talking to a real person or an artificial voice? And how can we develop strategies to detect suspicious voices and explain suspected manipulation – in a way that users can actually understand?
The “AntiScam” project at the University of Siegen is using an AI model to investigate how fraud attempts involving AI-generated voices can be distinguished from those produced by humans. The interdisciplinary team is developing both technical detection systems and strategies for digital self-defense. A particular focus is on explainable AI and interactive learning formats to raise awareness of common scam strategies.
Staying Without Really Arriving – University of Siegen
What does it do to a person to live in a state of ongoing legal insecurity — often over the course of many years? To have no certainty about whether they can remain in the country, to be allowed to work only under certain highly specific conditions, to have their place of residence dictated to them, and to be limited in their freedom of movement? And how does the staff of the responsible immigration office experience the handling of tolerated stays in their own daily work; how do they perceive their mission and their working conditions?
Nearly two hundred thousand people in Germany are in a situation of ‘tolerated stay.’ This means that deportation has been temporarily suspended, but also that the terms of that stay are unclear and are tied up with many incalculable factors. A study by the University of Siegen explored how local government authorities handle this “tolerated stay” and what impact it has on persons who live in this liminal situation, sometimes for years.
