To better address pandemic and epidemic risks, a new WHO Hub of global significance was inaugurated in Germany's capital on 1 September. To collect and evaluate data on a global scale, the centre can draw on the expertise of renowned German institutions: its partners include the Charité university hospital Berlin, the Robert Koch Institute and the Hasso Plattner Institute.

Between January 2019 and August 2020, numerous employees were hired in the German clusters of excellence – the majority of them were doctoral students. The aim of the multi-million funding for the clusters under the Excellence Strategy is to enable and push scientific excellence.
