German Chancellor Fellowship

Can you well imagine spending a year in Germany pursuing a project you have developed yourself? Are you from the USA, China, South Africa, Brazil or India? Are you a prospective leader with initial leadership experience and work in a sector such as politics, economics, administration or the media, or in the area of society or culture? Then apply to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for a German Chancellor Fellowship. As a fellow, you will spend a year in Germany networking with other young international leaders supported by the Humboldt Foundation and searching for new answers to the global questions of our time.

Who can apply?

Requirements for applicants include the following:

  • citizenship of the USA, the People’s Republic of China, South Africa, Brazil or India
  • bachelor’s degree or equivalent academic qualification obtained no longer than twelve years ago
  • confirmation from a host in Germany that the project developed by the applicant will be supervised and supported
  • project of social significance
  • potential to build future bridges between Germany and the applicant’s home country
  • proven initial leadership experience
  • a command of German or English

What form does funding take?

The main scholarship benefits are as follows:

Fellows receive a monthly fellowship of 2,200 euros, 2,300 euros or 2,600 euros, depending on their qualifications. Fellows can apply for additional financial support for accompanying family members. During a study tour of Germany, and while participating in numerous events, fellows have the opportunity to make contact with other fellows and representatives of German companies and institutions. The Humboldt Foundation offers extensive alumni sponsorship, particularly with a view to sustaining contact with collaborative partners in Germany throughout the fellow’s professional career.

The German Federal Chancellor is the patron of the German Chancellor Fellowship, which is funded by the Federal Foreign Office. Every year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awards up to 50 German Chancellor Fellowships to up to ten prospective leaders from each of the five aforementioned countries.

When is the closing date for applications?

Applications can be submitted online until 15 October 2022.
