Travel grants from the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds

You are conducting an experimental project in basic biomedical research and want to pursue a short-term research stay or attend a practical course relevant to your project in another country, but still need funding for your trip? Or you think it would be good to evaluate the scientific and personal fit with your supervisor before the start of your PhD project abroad? Then apply for a Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) travel grant for research stays of up to three months.
Who can apply?
Requirements for applicants include the following:
- applicants must currently pursue an experimental project in basic biomedical research aimed at elucidating basic biological phenomena of human life and acquiring new scientific knowledge
- PhD students or medical students during their doctoral thesis as well as postdocs
- graduates who have applied for a PhD project abroad, but who have not yet worked with their potential PhD supervisor
- eligible are European citizens working in Europe or overseas and non-European citizens who perform their MD, PhD or postdoctoral project in Europe, or will use the travel grant to work in Europe
What form does funding take?
The main scholarship benefits are as follows:
- lump sum contributing to the expenses for travel to and from grant holder's destination, lodging (e.g. student housing), and course fees
- a travel grant can be awarded only if the host institute covers all research-related costs and – in case of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers – if the home institution continues to pay the applicant’s salary
- for doctoral students and postdoc applicants from countries with very low incomes, additional funds for living costs may be granted
When is the closing date for applications?
Applications must be submitted to BIF the latest six weeks but no earlier than six months prior to the planned date of departure.
