As a team leader, for example, you

  • could manage an international team of researchers in application- and project-oriented research,
  • work on innovative solutions for concrete problems, develop standards or find alternatives to existing processes and
  • coordinate processes between the research department and management, procurement, production and sales.

You may also have to present your research findings at international conferences.

Application and salary

What you need to know if you are interested in a position at a research-oriented company:

The requirements generally include a good to very good doctorate in the appropriate subject area, research experience and methodological expertise. You can score additional points with experience of personnel and budget management, proof of international stays and completed industrial internships – especially if you have had contact with foreign subsidiaries of the relevant company.

You should not forget to refer to soft skills and additional qualifications, especially your teamwork skills and your ability to meet the job requirements. Show a deep understanding of the company, its products, culture and challenges. And you should know a great deal about the position you want.

Procedures can differ considerably, for example, when it comes to whether your application should be submitted electronically or delivered by mail and whether or not contacting your potential superior is desired and meaningful before you submit an application. That is why it is important to read the text of the advertisement very carefully and obtain as much information as possible in advance. Do not forget to meet the application deadline.

Depending on the advertised position, you will be expected to meet various requirements. These, your qualifications and your previous experience will determine how much you earn.

As a manager, your salary will usually not be governed by collective agreements and will therefore be a matter of individual negotiation. This means you will need good bargaining skills and should be aware of your true value.

After all, your salary expectations will play a central role in the job interview. Performance-oriented bonuses and additional benefits are often granted on top of a basic salary.
