PhD fellowships from the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds

Requirements for applicants include the following:

  • Applicants should not be older than 27.
  • The doctoral thesis must be experimental.
  • The doctoral thesis must pursue basic biomedical research.
  • Applicants should have completed their studies with a diploma, BSc, MSc or equivalent degree.

What form does funding take?

The fellowship comprises a competitive monthly stipend that is initially granted for two years and can be extended for up to another twelve months. Participation in international scientific conferences is also supported. In addition, fellowship holders are offered personal support, seminars at which to discuss their projects, communication training and alumni meetings, and thus can become part of a worldwide network. Furthermore, the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards travel grants to European citizens working in Europe and overseas, and to non-European citizens who pursue their MD, PhD or postdoctoral project in Europe, or will use the travel grant to work in Europe. Applicants must pursue an experimental project in basic biomedical research. Travel grants are awarded only for practical training in laboratories or courses of up to three months. They cannot be used for longer research stays.
