The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Free State of Saxony call on outstanding scientists to submit their innovative outline proposals for the establishment of two excellent large-scale research centres in Saxony by 2023. The competition, known as “Wissen schafft Perspektiven für die Region! (i.e. Science Creating Prospects for the Region) is designed to strengthen Germany‘s scientific competitiveness and help shape the scientific and economic future of the Lusation and Central German coalfield regions of Saxony.
Best minds and best ideas
The call is aimed at internationally renowned scientists either from Germany or abroad who are eager to participate in shaping the scientific and economic future of Germany and the Saxon coal-mining areas. The thematic orientation and the precise location of the two new research centres will be determined by the best minds and best ideas. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Free State of Saxony will be providing up to 170 million euros per year for each centre on a long-term basis within the framework of the Act on Structural Change in Coal Mining Areas (Strukturstärkungsgesetz Kohleregionen, StStG).
Selection procedure and requirements
The outline proposals will be evaluated by a high-level “perspectives commission” in a transparent and competitive procedure. Proposals involving partners from science and industry – from both inside and outside the two regions – are particularly welcome. A connection between the applicants and the envisaged location of the centre is not required.
The most promising proposals will receive temporary funding of up to 500,000 euros (for a period of about six months) so that they can be developed into viable and fully assessable proposals. In the long term, if proven successful, the centres will be supported by an annual budget of up to 170 million euros.
Applicants are required to hand in an outline proposal of max. 20 pages by 30 April 2021 outlining:
- An ambitious research mission
- An innovative approach to cooperation between science and industry, including a transfer strategy
- A proposal for possible core resources
