Small model of blocks of flats

Today, more people live in cities than in rural areas. In a few years, two out of three people in the world will have taken up residence in cities, consuming far more energy and resources than cities can provide. What is the best way to deal with this development? How can we turn cities into viable, resilient and sustainable living areas?

"Building the City of Tomorrow" – the latest campaign of Germany´s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) – reaches out internationally to find answers to these pressing urban challenges no nation could give on its own.

In 2017 and 2018, ten top-ranking research networks specializing in smart city solutions will be touring the world to forge international bonds with strong partners engaged in urban development.

They are inviting researchers, urban planners, architects, decision makers, municipal authorities and representatives from the private sector worldwide to share and reflect their ideas and innovative technologies, focusing on four priority topics pivotal to urban development.
