Dear Readers,
The advances in health research are tangible. More and more people today are able to live to a great age in good health and in full control of their own lives. Nevertheless, there are still too many diseases that could be avoided by the right preventive measures.
Therefore, health research must be strengthened. During the "Year of Science 2011 - Research for Our Health", we plan to talk about the great achievements of health research, to discuss its future prospects, opportunities and risks and we want to show that it concerns everyone.
Internationally, the year 2011 is devoted to chemistry, a fascinating natural science. We have chemistry to thank for many substances and materials that make our everyday lives that much easier. During the International Year of Chemistry 2011, Germany will also be contributing to a better understanding of the world of chemistry as well as its opportunities and possibilities with lectures, exhibitions and competitions.

Interview with Dr. Klaus Matthes, Science Counsellor at the German Embassy in Paris, and Dr. Andreas Stamm, researcher at the German Development Institute in Bonn, about the OECD project on international governance structures in research.
Science & Research News
Whether in industry, agriculture or healthcare, there are many potential applications for the new kind of extremely flexible robotic arm that was developed by three engineers at the Festo company in Esslingen and the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) in Stuttgart.
How can you record extremely dynamic molecular reactions and make visible such complex processes as influenza viruses entering human cells? Researchers from TU Berlin, the Helmholtz-Zentrum fuer Materialien und Energie in Berlin (HZB) and the University of Muenster have developed a new technique that uses a short pulse from an X-ray laser to film an ultrafast sequence of images.
A light-sensitive chip implanted under the retina can restore the vision of blind patients. They have even been able to identify letters again and read words. This pioneering result is the work of researchers at the Centre for Ophthalmology at the University Hospital in Tuebingen.
Recent Research Cooperation
A research project involving partners from China, Germany and Switzerland aims to improve the treatment of complicated liver diseases with computer-assisted operating techniques. At the world's largest liver centre, the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital (EHBH) in Shanghai, successful operations were recently carried out.
India and Germany have a new beacon of research cooperation: in the future, researchers and doctoral students from both countries will be conducting advanced interdisciplinary research on the subject of sustainability at the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability (IGCS) of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras in Chennai.
Latest R&D Funding Programmes and Activities
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's new Anneliese Maier Research Award will honour up to five outstanding foreign researchers a year from all areas of the humanities and social sciences. The award aims to strengthen the internationalisation of these subjects in Germany.
Cooperation between business and research: Siemens, the German technology group, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) are offering scholarships for young researchers from China, India and Russia as part of the Siemens/DAAD Postgraduate Programme.
Current R&D Policy
Today the world of chemistry plays a major role in nearly all spheres of life. Chemistry is more fascinating and more important that it often might appear at first glance. This is also the central message with which the International Year of Chemistry 2011 aims to inspire greater understanding for this natural science.
The future prospects, opportunities and challenges of health research in Germany are the main theme of the "Year of Science 2011 - Research for Our Health". The fields of health and nutrition are also major topics of the future for German research.
Last but not least...
The Interactive Shop Window, a new kind of 3D camera system developed by researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) in Berlin, opens up new opportunities for customers and retailers.
