The initiative “A New Passage to India” is designed to spark interest among German students and young academics in study and research in India and to further encourage the academic exchange between Germany and India. The programme is run by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and comprises three major components.

Enhancing Student Mobility

The programme builds on the existing links between German and Indian universities and research institutions as well as contacts between individual scholars and academics (e.g. DAAD and AvH alumni). As part of the programme, German universities can apply for financial support to send graduate and undergraduate students on study and research trips to partner institutions in India. The study and research stay can be combined with a practical training.

Working and research internships

The programme offers highly qualified German graduates support for six-month internships in an Indian or German company or organisation in India. After having completed a three-month preparatory course on Indian culture and lifestyle, German graduates thus have the opportunity to gain practical work experience in an Indian environment.Indian students who have completed a minimum of two years of their undergraduate studies can apply for a research internship in Germany. During a 1.5 to 3 month stay in Germany they will assist German doctoral students in their experimental project work. These internships should especially focus on fields that are part of the High-Tech Strategy of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Indo-German Centers of Excellence

A centre of excellence in the field of engineering and environmental sciences will be set up in Chennai at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. This center will help showcase cutting edge research from Germany.

To promote studies on contemporary India in the fields of political sciences, economics and sociology at German universities, selected institutes are supported by faculty from India. Fellowships for German and Indian academics are also granted.
